Instructor BiographiesAnna Jensen, Bass
Welcome to Anna Jensen's double bass studio at Hammond Ashley Violins. My pedagogy is built upon: technique, reading skills, music theory, aural training, and developing a life-long love for music. The typical lesson consists of warm-ups/exercises, solo pieces, and duets. Mimicking is one of the most powerful learning devices for young students, so I use an "I play, you play" format. Pairing this along with varied repetition provides the students with a fast-track learning curve. Anna Jensen holds degrees from the University of Michigan (Doctor of Musical Arts and Master or Music) and Central Washington University (Bachelor of Music). As an active orchestral musician, Dr. Jensen is the assistant principal bassist of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and regularly performs with regional orchestras across Washington. A sought after chamber musician, Anna performs with the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Festival, the Kairos Music Festival, and The Second City Chamber Music Series. Her interest in contemporary music has brought about numerous new chamber music works for the double bass and she has presented the world premieres of these works. While living in Ann Arbor, she participated in various contemporary music recording projects and was the co-principal double bassist on William Bolcom's Grammy winning recording, Songs of Innocence and Experience, conducted by Leonard Slatkin. Anna has won the Spokane Allied Arts Young Artist Competition, the Helen Snelling Crowe Competition, and was a finalist in both the Seattle Ladies Musical Club Young Artist Competition and the American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition. She has recently performed concertos with the Tacoma Young Artist Orchestra, the Wenatchee Symphony, and the Lake Chelan Bach Fest Orchestra. Prior to moving back to Washington, Anna was an instructor of double bass at Bowling Green State University. In addition to her private studio at Hammond Ashley, Dr. Jensen is currently the education specialist for The Tacoma Youth Symphony Association and the Festival Manager for The Evergreen Music Festival.
